New Zealand’s ports are compact, and the landscape starts almost at the end of the gangway. Geothermal valleys, wine regions and wildlife on the Otago Peninsula are all within reach of a single port day.

Which New Zealand port is best for Rotorua or Hobbiton?
Tauranga. Rotorua’s geothermal parks and the Hobbiton movie set are each about an hour’s drive from the wharf at Mount Maunganui, so either one fits into a port day.
Is it worth paying for a tour in Wellington or Napier?
Both cities reward a self-guided day. Wellington’s waterfront, the Te Papa museum and the cable car are easy on foot, and Napier’s Art Deco center is close to the port. A paid tour is most useful for the nearby wine regions.
