East Coast & Tropical North Ports

This stretch runs from Sydney’s harbor to the edge of the Great Barrier Reef and on to the Top End. The farther north you sail, the more the day revolves around reef boats, rainforest and wildlife, and the more it pays to plan transport ahead.

East Coast & Tropical North — FAQ

Which port is best for a Great Barrier Reef day?

Cairns, Port Douglas and Airlie Beach are the usual jumping-off points. Cairns and Port Douglas have the widest choice of outer-reef boats, while Airlie Beach is the base for Whitehaven Beach and scenic flights over the Whitsunday Islands.

Can I see Sydney on my own on a turnaround or port day?

Yes. Ships at Circular Quay are next to the Rocks, the Opera House and the main ferry wharves, so a harbor ferry, the Botanic Garden and a walk across the Harbour Bridge can all be done without a guide.
